Concept II SkiErg Review

Love skiing, but can’t get to the slopes as often as you’d like? The Concept II SkiErg will keep you in shape and bring the classic sport of skiing right into your home gym. This is the same machine pro skiiers use to train when they can’t ski outdoors, and the advanced console boasts a myriad of features that will help you get the most out of your workout.

After taking this machine for a few test runs, we all agree: there’s a lot to love about the SkiErg.

Pros

  • Great for interval training and endurance
  • Works nearly all parts of the body, especially the back
  • Built-in monitor lets you track your workout data and connects to your smartphone
  • Supports wireless heart rate monitoring
  • Can be mounted onto the wall for permanent installation
  • Handles are easy to grip and comfortable to hold

Cons

  • Does not mimic skate skiing

It should go without saying that this machine does not mimic skate skiing – nor does it claim to. But we felt we should still make note of it.

Concept II SkiErg Review

If you have any experience with fitness equipment, you’re probably familiar with the Concept II brand. They make professional equipment and are probably best known for their rowing machines.

The SkiErg is not a rower, nor does it pretend to be. It’s a machine that mimics the sport of Nordic skiing to build strength and endurance.

This machine uses the same exact electronic monitoring flywheel resistance systems that Concept II puts into their rowers.

The great thing about the SkiErg is that you are in control of the resistance level. The machine responds to your strokes, increasing or reducing the resistance based on your exertion. And if you really need to adjust the resistance level manually, the spiral damper makes this possible.

The handles are ergonomically designed and strapless, so they’re comfortable to hold and use. They don’t absorb sweat, either so your grip stays dry and secure.

The PM5 monitor is impressive on this model, just as it is on Concept II rowers. It lets you track your speed, distance, calories, pace and watts. You have multiple display options, too, so you can customize the way you see your data. The monitor can also connect to your smartphone for additional feedback and to log your progress.

The monitor is USB compatible, Bluetooth compatible and backlit for easy viewing.

SkiErg Features

  • Brings the sport of Nordic skiing to your home gym
  • Can use classic alternating or double pole arm technique
  • Performance monitor tracks workout data
  • Can be wall mounted or free standing
  • Ergonomic strapless handles
  • User-defined resistance

We had trouble finding any flaws with this machine. It has a rather compact footprint, and the workouts it delivers are hard to beat. Whether you’re training for next ski season or just want a great cardio/upper body workout, the Concept II SkiErg is a great piece of workout equipment to have in your home gym. We highly recommend it for users of all levels.
